Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Romans 13:1
Regardless of political affiliation, each and every leader in our country exists exclusively by God’s divine appointment. This morning we had some of our city leaders attend our morning service. It was such an honor for us as a church to pray over them. The Bible says that it is our responsibility to pray over our elected officials. Apostle Paul talks about this more than any other Bible writer. In 1 Timothy 2:1-3 he writes, “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people – for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior.”
Aren’t these verses pretty simple and straightforward? I know most of us get very passionate about politics and our political beliefs. Around election time, I see so many Christians abandon the fruit of the spirit. During our last election I had to mute notifications of so many of my social media friends including pastors because all decency is lost when it comes to voicing political opinion. The Bible is clear, we are to pray for all people, including our leaders – all those in authority. Yes, even those we don’t like and didn’t vote for or believe are unjust. I love how the verse ends, “This (praying for our leaders) is good, and pleases God our Savior”.
